2016 Primitivo
Primitivo is the Italian equivalent of Zinfandel. This clone is believed to have been introduced into Puglia region of Southern Italy in the 18th century before making its way to California in the 19th century. Our Primitivo comes from Dark Horse Ranch, a 160-acre Biodynamic certified ranch and vineyard owned and managed by Heath and Paul Dolan. 2016 began with some mild rain in Winter, which was welcomed with open arms after 4 years of drought. Our Harvest began on August 19th with our estate Viognier and finished on October 9th with Montepulciano. Yields in the vineyards were slightly lower than average to average, mainly due to overall small berry size on each cluster. The even, elongated growing season allowed for great flavor development and nice acid retention across the board. We finished with some very aromatic wines showing great promise. The nose is dominated by red fruit such as cherry and pomegranate, with a secondary layer of violets and an undertone of mushrooms and cloves that contribute to an earthy and spicy note. This Medium-bodied wine displays a balanced acidity and soft tannins which contribute to a velvety and elegant finish.
